“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. ”
The concept of man is a unique one. No one can understand the definition of man apart from the Bible. Culture did not produce man; Evolution did not produce man, God did. Sadly, when the word ‘man’ is used today, many times we think of defeat and failure; we think of inadequacy and corruption, but that’s not the man God created? Our opening Scripture tells us that in the beginning, God made man in His image and after His likeness. The word ‘image’ means expression of an object or a being, which means that which gives visibility or appreciation to an object or a being. Man is the visible expression of the invisible God; he is the visibility of the invisible God. Though God is invisible to the physical, yet He can be seen through man. God intended for man to be the visible expression of Himself. That’s what man is. Man is the image or visible expression of God; he is the likeness or visible resemblance of the invisible God. However the fall of man by transgression brought about a far cry from what God intended in the beginning. But thanks be to God for redemption and recreation of man by the substitutionary work of Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore man cannot be fully studied or understood apart from God’s original plan for mankind. As far as God is concerned, His original plan for man has not changed; it is altogether intact in Christ Jesus. Man is the visibility of the invisible God; the invisible God is seen in the visible realm in the person, life and being of man. That’s what man is.
God is holy; man is the expression of His holiness in Christ. God is wealthy; man is the expression of His wealth in Christ. To live in poverty is to live unlike the image or expression of God. God is the only wise God; man is the visible expression of His wisdom. Everything God is in the invisible realm, man is the expression of it in the visible realm. Jesus said to pray “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;” which means that when God made man, and put him on the earth, man was a reflection of the God of heaven on earth; God is King in heaven, man was made to be king on the earth. Henceforth, refuse to stoop low to shame and disdain inconsistent with the image or visible expression of God that you are in Christ!
My Solid Front (Confession): I declare that I am the image of God, to live life as God does. I declare that I am the reflection of God on earth. When people see me, they see God. Amen.
