December 10: God’s Word Is Life-giving

John 6:63

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Word of God is a living being. God is the source of life, so when He speaks, He speaks life. The Word of God is life-giving. In our opening Scripture, Jesus speaking to the people said, “It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh profits nothing, the words that I speak to you are spirit and life.” The Word is spirit and life. The Word is living and active. Everything to which God’s Word is spoken comes alive. The Word is life, and it gives life. Matthew 4:4 tells us that we live by the Word. Man does not live by bread alone but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. The Word, then, is our life. There is no life of and in Christ that is apart from the Word. We are born again by the Word (1 Peter 1:23), we live by faith which comes by the Word (Romans 1:17; 10:17) and we are built up into the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ by the Word (Acts 20:32). Can you see how indispensable the Word is to us? How impossible it is to live the Christ-life without the Word? How impossible it is to realize our God-given destinies without the Word?

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word is life-giving and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to dividing between the spirit and soul of man, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. So powerful is the Word that it is the only thing that divides between spirit and soul. When we go through tough times in life, and our souls are troubled, and we think that God is not mindful of us, when we meditate in the Word, it tells us the difference between how terribly we feel about ourselves as a result of what we are going through, and how warmly and affectionately God loves us and how He wants to help us overcome life’s challenges. The Word is so active and potent to reveal true reality to us, and also the make-believes and deceits of Satan. The Word mirrors reality to us. It is potent and active to discern the intents and contents of the heart. When we come to the Word, we come to reality.

My Solid Front (Confession):

In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I declare that I give attention to the Word, and that I meditate in the Word daily. I meditate in the Word; therefore, I am in touch with reality, not make-believes. Amen.
