“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
The Word tells us in the opening verse that we, God’s children in Christ Jesus, are the light of the world; a city that is set on a hill which cannot be hidden. This expression shows two things: First, that we are the light of the world; and second, that we are a city on a hill – light and a city on a hill. These two expressions are a description of who we are and what defines us. Light shines and shines brighter with height and space. No one lights a candle and puts it under the table that it may give light to everyone in the room. Candles are placed on high platforms to give light to everyone; they are meant to illuminate. Again, a city that is set on a hill is a reference point to all, and for many things. No one will miss the description or situation of a city set on a hill. Two things stand out for us here: Influence and Prominence; light and height. The Lord Jesus Christ uses these expressions to paint a picture of who we are and how we ought to operate as God’s children. We are the light of the world. We call the shots. We set the pace, we blaze the trail and shine the light. God’s children are not meant to take the back seat while unbelievers are running the world, taking the lead and making the mark. Their mark will be a scar on the world. We are not to play second fiddle in matters pertaining to leadership, influence, shaping the world and creating generational legacy. We are the light of the world.
Christians are meant to seek height in every human endeavour. We ought to gun for the topmost top in career, business, academics, sports, entertainment, education, politics, ministry, etc. We cannot influence people for the Lord dwelling in the low places of life. Light illuminates more with height; the higher the candle is placed, the more it can illuminate. We cannot influence a lot of people for the Lord, if we don’t attain unto stature and height in life. In verse 16 of Matthew 5, the Lord Jesus tells us to let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works, and glorify our Father that is in heaven; which means that our light shines through good works of love, excellence, faith, nation building, charity, integrity, etc. Beloved, you are the light of the world, a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden. In all you do, seek influence and prominence, seek to illuminate and bless people at the highest possible places. Let your light so shine!
My Solid Front (Confession):
In the Name of Jesus, I declare that I am the light of the world, a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden. My influence and prominence magnetise people to Jesus. Amen.
