“For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith”
Romans 1:17 tells us that the righteousness of God is revealed in the Gospel of Christ. Verse 16 of Chapter 1 of Romans says the Gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to those who believe it. It is evident that the righteousness of God is revealed in the Gospel that we might believe unto it, not work unto it. This was the error of the Jews; they wanted to work unto it instead of believing unto it.
Our opening verse tells us that they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness (self-righteousness), have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God. What was their challenge? They were ignorant of the righteousness of God, this was the reason they went about establishing their own self-righteousness which never did please God. It was their ignorance of God’s righteousness that made them not to submit to God’s righteousness.
What then is God’s righteousness? Romans 10:10 tells us that it is with the heart that we believe unto righteousness and with the mouth we make confession unto salvation. Believe and confess what? Verse 9 of Romans 10 tells us that if we believe that God has raised Jesus from the dead (that’s what we believe), and we confess that Jesus is Lord, we shall be saved. This is the earth-crust of the Gospel message: That Jesus died for us and was raised from the dead for our justification and that He is Lord over all. This is how to receive the righteousness of God: By faith in Jesus’ resurrection. Hallelujah! The righteousness of God is of faith in Jesus Christ. It cannot be received by the works of self-righteousness. Did you get it?
My Solid Front (Confession): In the Name of Jesus Christ, I declare that I am a believer in Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead; therefore I am righteous by faith and I am a partaker of God’s righteousness in Christ Jesus. Amen.
