37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
Our opening Scripture reveals the passionate call of the Master to everyone that thirsts. “…Jesus stood and cried, saying, if any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” This particular Scripture speaks of getting filled with the Spirit. What did the Lord Jesus tell us as to how to get filled with the Spirit? By coming to drink. Drinking is the key word. What does it mean to drink? It means to open your mouth with desire and allow drink or water into you. It means to have a desire to receive or draw from a source, what is needed by you. Drinking involves the opening of your mouth and the desire to swallow what you have in your mouth. You drink with your mouth open and not with your mouth closed. To be filled with the Spirit, your mouth must stay open to the Holy Spirit and there must be a strong desire to let Him fill you, overwhelm you. This means you will come to God with a desire. Without a desire, you cannot drink. You must be thirsty and willing to drink in the Spirit until you are filled and overwhelmed by Him. So, thirst, desire, hunger are involved here. The invitation the Lord made to people regarding coming to get filled with the Spirit, is only to the thirsty.
Desire is proof of need. When you get thirsty for the Spirit, that’s proof that you really need Him. The desire that you need the Spirit of God to help, strengthen, and lift you, that you cannot do it by yourself, that you can only do what God has called you to do by the Spirit of God, is that which is needed to get filled with the Spirit. Desire precedes drinking, which means that you will begin to drink in the Spirit unto infilling when you have a desire for the Spirit, that is, you have a consciousness of need of the Spirit. This implies that you cannot do life without Him; for we are not sufficient of ourselves to do anything of ourselves, our sufficiency is of God. Knowing this, then you come to drink. How do you drink? Speaking! Can you speak with your mouth closed? NO! You don’t think prayers, you say them. You give a voice to them. This principle of getting filled with the Spirit starts with opening your mouth and speaking in tongues, singing, making melody in your heart to the Lord, and giving thanks to God always. God is a speaking God. So, you speak! (Ephesians 5:18-21)
