It matters where you stand in life. As to the importance of where one stands in life, the account of David and Jonathan precipitates for consideration. God had a covenant with David and Jonathan was David’s covenant friend. And the Bible tells us that Jonathan loved David as his own soul. Jonathan’s soul was altogether knitted with David’s; they were covenant friends. But where Jonathan stood with King Saul his father betrayed his covenant standing with David; it was a position of bias and sentiment. He knew King Saul was after David’s life and wanted to kill him for envy. He helped David to escape death a couple of times, but his tie with his father coloured his good sense of judgement. Jonathan died with his father in battle. Pathetic, tragic! Jonathan should not have died with Saul but because he took a wrong stance, he died an untimely death. David wept bitterly and sang a dirge: “how are the mighty fallen and the weapons of war destroyed.” It is important where you stand, and that is informed by your understanding. Don’t let sentiment or family biases impact your understanding wrongly. Don’t let your heart be deceived to think that you can sit on the fence and expect to have the blessings of both sides of it. Life doesn’t work that way. You must be absolute and polarized in your decisions.
Adam and Eve stood with God before the serpent came in and somehow, because of lack of understanding, they changed their standing and stood against God by transgressing His Word and lost their position of privilege and blessing. So, your standing is everything and your understanding informs your standing. So, get understanding. The Bible says wisdom is the principal thing, therefore, get wisdom and with all thy getting, which means with all that you get, get understanding. Beloved, don’t stand with someone or with something just because of sentiment. What exactly has God called you to do? What exactly did God tell you to do? Don’t say, well I feel like doing this because someone else is doing it. You must stand by understanding! God’s purpose for you is unique to you. Don’t trade it off for the so called ‘in-things’. Too many people have lost their relevance and steam in life just because they followed other people to do what God did not command. Be wise! Let good understanding inform your standing in life.
My Solid Front (Confession):
In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I declare that I stand with and on the Word by grace, come what may. I am strengthened by the Spirit of God to stand on and with the Word, no matter what. My life is directed and led by the Spirit to live by and in the Word daily. Amen.
